What about multiple flu vaccines?
The short version: repeated flu shots weaken your antibody response to new strains, and the evidence for net benefit is built on studies that compare the vaccinated to the vaccinated.
The evidence tells a clear story about immune interference. A 2020 pilot study of 20 adults found that people who had received 3–5 flu shots in the prior 5 years had significantly lower antibody-secreting cell responses and lower hemagglutination inhibition (HAI) fold changes after vaccination than people who had received 0–2 shots [3]. A 2021 study of 140 adults and teenagers found that HAI composite scores declined in the second season for teenagers, though not for adults [7]. A 1999 study found that in elderly people, post-vaccination antibody titers plateaued or slightly declined after the third annual shot [1]. The 2018 Swedish cohort study of people over 65, which claimed no negative effect of repeated vaccination, compared the vaccinated to the vaccinated — it never included an unvaccinated group [4]. That design cannot detect harm that affects both groups equally.
The 2025 eLife study of 136 people who received the same H1N1 strain four years in a row found that repeated shots broadened antibody responses to historically unmatched flu viruses [6, 8]. That sounds good, but breadth to old viruses is not the same as protection against the next circulating strain. The same study also showed that repeatedly vaccinated people started with higher baseline antibody titers but had a smaller fold-increase after each shot [8]. The immune system gets stuck responding to what it has already seen.

The safety data is thin. A 2015 study found that repeated flu shots induced IgE antibodies (the type involved in allergic sensitization) in young children, especially those under 3 [9]. A VAERS review of the recombinant flu vaccine found allergic reactions and anaphylaxis as the most common reported events [17]. Passive surveillance systems like VAERS detect only a fraction of real events.
My call: the evidence shows that repeated annual flu vaccination blunts the acute antibody response and may narrow immune focus, especially in younger people. The benefit for healthy adults and children is not proven by studies that compare the vaccinated to the vaccinated. Confidence: moderate.
