Do all flu vaccines now contain MRNA
The short version: no, not all flu vaccines contain mRNA. The vast majority of seasonal flu shots are still the older egg-based or cell-culture inactivated vaccines. mRNA flu vaccines exist in trials and some have been approved for specific seasons, but they have not replaced the standard flu shot.
The evidence you are seeing is almost entirely about mRNA flu vaccines in development, not about what is in the syringe at your pharmacy. A 2025 review of pediatric influenza vaccines lists the standard types as inactivated, attenuated, virosomal, and recombinant, and only mentions mRNA as a platform "under development" [3]. A 2025 study tested an H5N1 (bird flu) mRNA vaccine in ferrets, again a pandemic preparedness product, not a seasonal shot [1]. The 2025 study of a bivalent mRNA vaccine targeting both seasonal flu and SARS-CoV-2 was in mice, not humans [4].
So the answer is clear: the standard flu vaccine you are offered today is almost certainly not mRNA. The mRNA flu vaccines are coming, but they are not here yet in the mainstream. If you want to know for sure, ask for the brand name and look up its type. The package insert will say "inactivated influenza vaccine" or "recombinant" or "live attenuated." It will not say "mRNA" unless you are in a very specific, limited rollout.
