What is the best mineral or vitamin supplement that can help mitigate psoriasis symptoms?
There is no single best supplement. The evidence is mixed: vitamin D helps if you are deficient, but trial data does not prove it clears psoriasis in everyone.
The strongest link is correlational, not causal. Multiple case-control studies find that people with psoriasis have lower blood levels of vitamin D than matched controls (22.9 vs 35.1 ng/mL in one Indian study, and 24.4 vs 29.5 in another) [9, 4]. Lower D correlates with more severe disease [9]. A 2024 systematic review and meta-analysis of oral vitamin D supplementation, however, found no statistically significant improvement in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) at 3, 6, or 12 months [1]. The single positive pediatric study gave 1000 IU daily alongside standard topical therapy and saw a mean PASI reduction to 3.2 versus 5.8 in controls – but this was a prospective cohort, not a blinded randomized trial, and all the kids also got topical corticosteroids and emollients, making it impossible to know what did the work [2].

The fundamental problem is that the mechanism makes good sense – vitamin D suppresses inflammatory Th1/Th17 responses and promotes regulatory T cells [7] – but the clinical trials have not delivered a clear signal. The evidence does not show harm from moderate supplementation, but the burden of proof for benefit, especially over standard dermatologic care, has not been met. If your blood level is below 30 ng/mL, correcting that deficiency is reasonable. Expecting a bottle of vitamin D to clear plaque psoriasis by itself is not supported by the data.
My call: the best evidence points to correcting measured vitamin D deficiency, not to a specific supplement as a standalone therapy. Confidence: moderate.
