What is the best way to take DMSO internally and what ratios are best
The short version: there is no established safe oral dosing protocol for humans in the evidence retrieved, and the animal data that exists raises real cautions.
The evidence here is almost entirely from animal and lab studies, not human trials. One study in horses gave a single oral dose of about 107 mg/kg (roughly 60 mL of 90% DMSO mixed with molasses) and found it reached a peak blood level of about 91 µg/mL with an oral bioavailability of about 47% [2]. That is a large single dose in a large animal, not a daily regimen for a person. A rat study using DMSO as a vehicle for a pesticide found the combination had a no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of 165 mg/kg and an LD50 of about 692 mg/kg [7]. That is a wide gap, but it is in rats, and the DMSO was given alongside a toxic pesticide, not alone.
The in vitro evidence is more troubling. A 2024 study on human dental stem cells found that DMSO concentrations as low as 1% significantly reduced cell viability at 72 hours and 7 days, and 5% was cytotoxic at all time points [5]. Another study showed that DMSO at concentrations above 20% can precipitate and denature proteins [15]. These are lab conditions, but they tell you that DMSO is not an inert solvent. It disrupts protein structure and cell survival at concentrations that are not extreme.
There is no human clinical trial in this evidence set that tests oral DMSO at any dose for any condition. The one human study here used DMSO as a topical cream for osteoarthritis, not oral dosing [3]. The cost-effectiveness study for reflex sympathetic dystrophy also used topical DMSO [19]. The evidence for oral use is limited to animal models: a 1986 mouse study that gave DMSO orally and found it extended life span in autoimmune disease [1], and a 2023 rat study that used DMSO as a vehicle for clove oil and found the DMSO vehicle alone actually worsened sperm damage compared to cadmium alone [4]. That last finding is a red flag: DMSO was not neutral in that study, it was harmful.
My call: the evidence does not support any specific oral DMSO protocol for humans. The animal data suggests a wide range between no-effect and toxic doses, but no human safety or efficacy trial exists in this retrieval. Confidence: low. If you are considering oral DMSO, you are operating outside any evidence-based framework, and the in vitro data on cell toxicity and protein denaturation should give you serious pause.
