Why does boron work so well with neurological pain and stiffness
The short version: boron has plausible mechanisms for neurological pain and stiffness, but the human evidence is almost nonexistent.
The evidence you were given is almost entirely from plants, rats, and cell lines. One rat study of spinal cord ischemia shows borax pretreatment improved motor scores from 2.1 to 8.4 on the BBB scale and nearly doubled normal neuron counts [15]. A separate rat study found a supplement containing boron activated the Nrf2/HO-1 antioxidant pathway in brain tissue [12]. The only human data is a 2011 trial in 12 healthy men: weekly boron supplementation lowered TNF-α from 12.3 to 10.0 pg/mL and hsCRP from 1460 to 795 ng/mL [3]. That is anti-inflammatory, but those men did not have neurological pain.
The mechanism is coherent. Boron modulates inflammation and oxidative stress, both central to neuropathic pain. The rat spinal cord study [15] and the 2025 boron nanoplatelet study showing upregulated β-NGF and CNTF in nerve tissue [4] point toward a real biological effect. But plausible mechanism is not proof. No human trial has tested boron against neurological pain or stiffness as a primary outcome. The entire human evidence base is one small cytokine study in healthy men.

My call: the hypothesis is worth pursuing but the evidence does not yet support using boron for neurological pain or stiffness in humans. Confidence: low — the mechanism is promising, the preclinical data is positive, but no human trial has asked the question.
