cilantro for Heavy metal chelation
The short version: there is no human trial testing whether cilantro chelates heavy metals in people, and the evidence that exists is too thin to rely on.
One 2019 review paper lists cilantro alongside garlic, milk thistle, and turmeric as herbs that "show potential" for heavy metal chelation [1]. It reports that cilantro has been studied for excreting mercury and lead, and cites a single reference for that claim [1]. That is the only human-relevant evidence the searches surfaced. The same review covers many herbs and does not report any trial design, dose, duration, or clinical outcome for cilantro specifically. It is a list, not a result.
The rest of the evidence does not test whether eating cilantro removes heavy metals from human bodies. Several studies measure heavy metal content in coriander as a food crop, showing that the plant can take up metals from contaminated soil and water [2]. One study found that iron oxide nanoparticles reduced cadmium and lead uptake in coriander plants grown in polluted soil [3]. Those are about the plant's health, not yours.
The evidence base for cilantro as a chelator in humans is thin. A single review that mentions the herb in passing, with no clinical data, does not justify using cilantro to treat heavy metal toxicity. No randomized trial, no controlled study in humans, no hard outcome (blood metal levels, symptom relief, organ function) appears in these records. The mechanism is plausible if cilantro contains compounds that bind metals in the gut, but plausible is not proven.
My call: there is no adequate evidence that cilantro chelates heavy metals in humans. If you have confirmed heavy metal toxicity, work with a clinician who tests blood or urine levels and uses established chelation protocols, not an herb. Confidence: low (for the claim that cilantro works, the evidence is near zero).
