Can coconut oil help with memory loss
Coconut oil has a plausible mechanism and a thin human record. It is not a proven treatment for memory loss, and the one human trial here is a small re-analysis, not a randomized test.
The mechanism is real but indirect. Coconut oil is mostly medium-chain triglycerides, fats absorbed and burned differently than ordinary fat [3][4]. In a lab dish, coconut oil protected cortical neurons from amyloid-beta, the protein fragment that builds up in Alzheimer's brains [1]. In normal rats, virgin coconut oil improved maze performance and lowered the enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine, a memory chemical [2]. That is a coherent story. It is also a dish and a rat.
The human evidence is one small re-analysis. In Japanese patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's, medium-chain triglycerides improved word recall and orientation in the milder group (MMSE 15 or above, 15 patients), with no significant gain in the more severe group (7 patients) [6]. That is a subgroup finding in a tiny sample, not a randomized trial with a hard outcome.
| What we have | What it shows | What it cannot tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Lab neurons [1] | Coconut oil protected cells from amyloid | Whether humans benefit |
| Normal rats [2] | Better maze memory, less oxidative stress | Whether humans benefit |
| Alzheimer's re-analysis [6] | Small recall gain in milder patients | Whether it changes real function |
Coconut oil is also a fat load. The MCT studies here are about body composition and thermogenesis, not memory [5][7]. No long-term safety or outcome data for memory is in front of me.
My call: not worth relying on for memory loss; the human evidence is one small subgroup analysis. Confidence: low.

Coconut Oil Attenuates the Effects of Amyloid-β on Cortical Neurons in vitro
This pilot study investigates the neuroprotective effects of coconut oil on cortical neurons exposed to amyloid-β, demonstrating that coconut oil supplementation can enhance neuron survival and mitigate mitochondrial alterations induced by amyloid-β.

Enhanced memory in Wistar rats by virgin coconut oil is associated with increased antioxidative, cholinergic activities and reduced oxidative stress
Virgin coconut oil enhances memory in normal adult male Wistar rats in the Morris Water Maze, accompanied by reduced acetylcholinesterase activity, increased acetylcholine levels, boosted brain antioxidant defenses (SOD, CAT, GSH, GPx), and reduced oxidative stress (lower MDA an…

Thermic effect of medium-chain and long-chain triglycerides in man
This study compares the thermic effects of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) and long-chain triglycerides (LCT) in seven healthy men, finding that MCT ingestion leads to a significantly higher metabolic rate and plasma beta-hydroxybutyrate concentration compared to LCT.

The Use of Medium-Chain Triglyceride in Children with Intestinal Malabsorption
Medium-chain triglycerides are absorbed more readily than long-chain triglycerides and can reduce steatorrhoea and provide calories in children with malabsorption due to pancreatic, liver, small-bowel, or lymphatic disease, though long-term benefits are uncertain.

Thermogenesis in humans during overfeeding with medium-chain triglycerides
This study investigates the thermogenic effects of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) compared to long-chain triglycerides (LCT) during overfeeding in humans, revealing that MCT significantly enhances thermogenesis and energy expenditure.

Medium‐chain triglycerides given in the early stage of mild‐to‐moderate Alzheimer's disease enhance memory function
This study re-analyzes data from Japanese patients with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer's disease to demonstrate that medium-chain triglycerides can enhance memory and orientation functions, particularly in patients with less severe cognitive decline.

Overfeeding with medium-chain triglyceride diet results in diminished deposition of fat
The study investigates the effects of overfeeding rats with a medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) diet compared to a long-chain triglyceride (LCT) diet, finding that MCT significantly reduces weight gain and fat deposition.
