Could a Covid vaccine cause a rash around the breast which then turned out the be cancer
The short version: a vaccine can cause a rash on the breast, but it cannot cause the breast cancer that the rash might reveal.
The evidence here is clear on one point and silent on the other. COVID-19 vaccines cause temporary inflammation in the breast and armpit area. A systematic review of 880 cases found that the vaccine commonly causes swollen lymph nodes in the armpit on the same side as the injection, which can show up on mammograms and MRI scans [12, 13]. A separate case report describes a woman who developed lymphangitis (inflammation of the lymph vessels) in her right breast and chest two days after a Moderna shot [17]. A rash is a milder form of the same inflammatory response. The vaccine is telling your immune system to react, and that reaction can show up on the skin.
But a rash is not cancer, and inflammation does not create a tumor. The largest study on this question, a South Korean population-based cohort of hundreds of thousands of people, found no increased risk of breast cancer in the year after COVID-19 vaccination [15]. The hazard ratio for breast cancer was 1.01, meaning the vaccinated group had essentially the same rate as the unvaccinated group. A small case series of five patients who developed various cancers after vaccination is too weak to change that conclusion [16]. It has no control group, no statistics, and the author attributes the cancers to "energy deficiency" measured by a non-standard method.
What likely happened is that the vaccine's inflammatory effect drew attention to a breast that already had a problem. A rash or swelling made you look, and the mammogram or biopsy found a cancer that was already growing. The vaccine did not cause the cancer. It caused you to find it earlier.
My call: the vaccine can cause a breast rash, but it cannot cause breast cancer. The rash may have led to a diagnosis that was already due. Confidence: high for the no-causation claim, based on the large population study [15]; moderate for the rash mechanism, based on the systematic reviews of lymphadenopathy [12, 13] and the case of lymphangitis [17].
