Dandelion root extract
The evidence for dandelion root extract is almost entirely from lab dishes and mice, not from human trials.
The retrieved studies show dandelion root extract can kill prostate and breast cancer cells in a petri dish [1, 3] and shrink tumors in mice [1]. It also reduced liver scarring in mice with chemically damaged livers [4]. A 2026 study found the extract has strong antioxidant activity and boosted the activity of a cholesterol-lowering gut bacterium in a test tube [2]. A 1993 study measured the mineral content of the root but found no significant diuretic effect in humans [5].
These are all early-stage, preclinical findings. Not a single study in this retrieval tested dandelion root extract against a placebo in a human trial for any condition. The cancer studies were funded by a university, not a supplement company, which is better than industry-funded work, but the gap between a mouse xenograft and a human patient is enormous [1]. The liver study is from 2010 and also only in mice [4].
The absence of human trials is the central problem. Without them, you cannot know the real dose, the real benefit, or the real risks for a person. The extract contains dozens of compounds [2], and any of them could interact with medications or cause unexpected effects. The traditional use as a "blood purifier" or diuretic has not been validated by modern controlled studies in this retrieval.
My call: dandelion root extract shows plausible biological activity in early lab research, but there is no human evidence to support taking it for any specific health goal. Confidence: low.
