diverticulitis and covid vaccine link
The short version: the evidence you asked for does not exist. No study in the retrieval tested whether COVID-19 vaccination raises the risk of diverticulitis or diverticular complications.
The retrieval contains 27 records. None of them name diverticulitis, diverticular disease, colonic diverticula, or any related gastrointestinal perforation or infection as an outcome. The closest studies look at splanchnic vein thrombosis (a blood clot in abdominal veins) after COVID-19 or vaccination [5], and at gastrointestinal symptom worsening in women with endometriosis after vaccination [17]. Neither answers your question.
Without a study that compares diverticulitis rates in vaccinated versus unvaccinated people over time, there is no evidence to weigh. The absence of a published signal in passive surveillance systems like VAERS is not evidence of safety—those systems detect almost nothing by design, and underreporting is the norm. A condition as common as diverticulitis (about 1 in 5 people with diverticulosis will develop it at some point) could easily be missed or attributed to background noise.
Mechanistically, the spike protein and the inflammatory response to mRNA or adenoviral vaccines can affect the gut. Inflammation is a known trigger for diverticulitis flares. But a plausible mechanism is not proof. The question deserves a real study: a prospective cohort comparing diverticulitis incidence in vaccinated and unvaccinated adults, stratified by age and prior diverticular disease, followed for at least two years. That study has not been done, or at least has not been published where this retrieval could find it.
My call: there is no evidence of a link, and no evidence of no link. The question is unstudied. Confidence: not clear.
