Effect of boron nutrient supplements on athritis

Sep 24, 2026 · 3 sources used · OpenNeedle synthesis
The evidence for boron supplements improving arthritis is thin and indirect. No retrieved study tested boron against arthritis in humans.

The closest human study gave healthy men weekly boron and found it lowered the inflammatory marker hsCRP by about 45% and TNF‑α by about 19% [3]. That is a plausible mechanism — inflammation drives arthritis pain — but it is not the same as showing symptom relief in people who already have arthritis. A rat study that included boron as part of a four‑supplement mix activated an antioxidant pathway in the brain [1], and a chicken study found boron raised superoxide dismutase (an antioxidant enzyme) [2]. Neither tested joint outcomes.

What is missing is the direct test. No trial in the retrieved records gave boron to people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and measured their pain, stiffness, or function. The supplement industry often points to boron’s role in bone and mineral metabolism — the chicken study did find a statistical interaction between boron and calcium [2] — but that is a laboratory signal, not clinical proof.

My call: boron has a plausible anti‑inflammatory mechanism but zero direct human arthritis trial data to back it. Confidence: low.
