Question explored with the scientific record
Are the flu jabs mRNA
No licensed flu jab in the U.S. today is mRNA. The mRNA flu vaccines are still in trials.
The evidence you retrieved confirms this. Moderna's seasonal flu candidate (qIRV) is only in Phase II trials [5]. A 2020 systematic review lists H7N9/H10N8 mRNA flu vaccines only in Phase I [1]. Self-amplifying mRNA flu vaccines are still in mouse studies [3, 6]. The licensed flu shots you get at the pharmacy are made the old way: egg-grown, inactivated virus, or recombinant protein. None of them use mRNA.
The trials that exist are small and early. They measure antibody titers, not real-world protection against hospitalization or death [1, 5]. The mouse studies show strong immune responses, but mice are not people [3]. No mRNA flu vaccine has long-term safety data in humans because none has been approved yet.
| Vaccine type | Platform | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Seasonal flu shot (Fluzone, Fluad) | Inactivated virus, egg-grown | Licensed, decades of use |
| Recombinant flu shot (Flublok) | Protein made in insect cells | Licensed |
| mRNA flu (Moderna qIRV) | mRNA in lipid nanoparticles | Phase II trials [5] |
| mRNA flu (H7N9/H10N8) | mRNA in nanoparticles | Phase I trials [1] |
| Self-amplifying mRNA flu (H5N1) | saRNA in nanoparticles | Mouse studies only [3] |
My call: if someone tells you the flu shot you're being offered is mRNA, they are wrong. The mRNA flu vaccines are not on the market. Confidence: high.
