The flu shot in the UK for 2026: it prevents some infections, but the protection is modest, wanes within months, and the long-term safety data is thin.

The evidence here is mostly about effectiveness, not safety. One UK study of the 2011/12 season found the vaccine cut confirmed H3N2 flu by only about 23%, and that protection dropped from about 53% to 12% within three months [3]. Against flu B that same season it worked far better, around 92% [3]. In children, England’s nasal spray vaccine cut flu hospitalizations by about half over three seasons, but for children with medical risk factors the estimate was essentially zero [4]. The safety record here is mostly absent. The honest summary: the flu shot gives real but variable protection, often modest, that fades during the season. The burden of proof for safety in healthy people has not been met by the studies here.

My call: for older adults and high-risk groups, the shot may be worth it in a bad flu season, but the benefit is smaller and shorter-lived than advertised. For healthy adults and children, the evidence of net benefit is weak. Confidence: moderate on effectiveness, low on long-term safety.
