What foods is good for prostate
The short version: the strongest evidence points toward tomatoes and soy, and away from dairy.
The most recent study, from 2025, followed nearly 3,000 men in Spain for about six years. Those who ate the most lycopene, the red pigment in tomatoes, had about half the risk of prostate cancer compared to those who ate the least. Protection started at about 5 mg per day, roughly one medium tomato or a few spoonfuls of tomato sauce [2]. A 2019 review of the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in tomatoes, olive oil, and vegetables, also found lower prostate cancer risk across many studies [1].
Soy foods show a similar pattern. A 2009 meta-analysis of 13 studies found that men who ate the most soy had about a 30% lower risk of prostate cancer. The effect was strongest for non-fermented soy like tofu and for the isoflavones genistein and daidzein [19]. Typical Asian intakes are 25 to 50 mg of isoflavones per day, far above the Western average [18].
Dairy is the opposite story. A 2005 meta-analysis found that high dairy intake raised prostate cancer risk by about 11%, and high calcium intake by about 39% [6]. A large European study from 2008 found that men who ate the most dairy protein had a 32% higher risk [8]. Even after a diagnosis, men who ate three or more servings of dairy per day had more than double the risk of dying from prostate cancer [13]. Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and kale showed a weaker and less consistent link to prostate cancer specifically, though they protect against other cancers [3].
