GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is a natural brain chemical, not a drug, and the evidence for taking it as a supplement is weak for most claims, with no long-term human safety data from the retrieved studies.

The retrieved studies focus almost entirely on GABA production in fermented foods like cheese, bread, kimchi, and sausage [1][2][3][4][8], using GABA-producing bacteria to boost food content [2][4]. One animal study found dietary GABA did not affect meat quality in heat-stressed broiler chickens [5]. None of the papers test oral GABA supplements in humans for mood, sleep, anxiety, or any other health outcome.

The most relevant evidence comes from a 2025 cell and mouse study showing GABA reduced estrogen-driven breast cancer cell growth and tumors in mice [10]. That is early preclinical work — not proof it works in people, and not a safety study for long-term use. Another 2025 rodent study found that a drug designed to increase GABA signaling (GABA-AT inhibitor) reduced nerve pain in mice [12], but that is a drug, not the supplement.

The rest of the records cover GABA detection methods [9], a rare inherited metabolic condition called SSADH deficiency [6], GABA levels in rat reproductive tissues [7], and a human study finding no difference in brain GABA levels between people with remitted depression and controls [11]. None of these support or refute GABA supplements for common use.

My call: the evidence does not support oral GABA supplements for any human health claim based on these records. Confidence: low — because the question is not about the molecule but about a specific supplement product, and the retrieved studies never tested that product in humans. No safety or dosing data from these papers either.
