is ginger good for you
The short version: ginger is a real food with real biological activity, but most of the impressive claims rest on lab dishes and animal studies, not on proof in your body.
The honest answer is that ginger is probably good for you as a food, and the evidence for a few specific uses is decent, but the marketing has run far ahead of the science. The strongest human data comes from diabetes. A 2014 randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in people with type 2 diabetes found that ginger powder lowered fasting blood sugar by about 18 mg/dL and HbA1c by about 0.4% over the study period, while the placebo group got worse [8]. A 2025 umbrella review of reviews agreed, finding ginger likely reduces HbA1c and fasting glucose, though it rated the evidence as low certainty [9]. That is a real signal, but it is modest, and the studies are small.
For nausea, the picture is murkier. A 2013 systematic review of ginger for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting concluded the evidence does not support its effectiveness [1]. Some individual trials showed small benefits on acute nausea, but not on vomiting or delayed nausea [1]. The mechanism is plausible: ginger compounds block the 5-HT3 receptor, the same target as anti-nausea drugs, in human gut neurons [7]. But a plausible mechanism is not the same as a proven clinical effect.
For pain and inflammation, the evidence is mostly laboratory work. Ginger extracts and compounds like 6-shogaol and 6-gingerol suppress inflammatory pathways in cells and animals [3, 4, 6]. A 2011 systematic review of eight trials for pain found tentative, heterogeneous evidence, with no definitive conclusions [2]. Some osteoarthritis trials showed ginger comparable to ibuprofen, but others showed nothing [2]. The docking studies suggesting anti-cancer effects are computer simulations, not evidence of benefit in a human body [5].
The key question is what you are asking ginger to do. As a spice in food, it is safe and adds flavor with plausible anti-inflammatory activity. As a treatment for diabetes, the evidence is real but modest. As a treatment for nausea, pain, or cancer, the evidence is weak or missing. Nobody has run the large, long-term trials that would settle whether ginger meaningfully changes disease outcomes. The burden of proof has not been met for the big claims.
My call: ginger is a reasonable food and a modest adjunct for blood sugar control, but do not expect it to treat nausea, pain, or anything serious. Confidence: moderate for the diabetes effect, low for everything else.
