The short version: the evidence does not show that green tea prevents acute respiratory infections in children. The closest study is a Japanese observational gargling study, not a prevention trial.
The only retrieved study that directly touches children and respiratory infection is a 2012 Japanese observational study of 19,595 preschool children who gargled daily at nursery school [29]. Gargling with green tea was associated with a lower odds of daytime fever (odds ratio about 0.32), but the study was observational, not a randomized trial, and it measured gargling, not drinking green tea. The children who gargled may have differed in other ways that matter. No study in the retrieved evidence tested whether drinking green tea prevents a respiratory infection in children.
The rest of the evidence is off-scope. There are in vitro studies showing green tea compounds can inhibit viruses in a dish [10, 11, 12, 16], a clinical trial of green tea polyphenol buccal tablets for pharyngitis in adults [21], and many animal and cell studies. None of these answer the question about a child drinking green tea to avoid catching a respiratory infection.
My call: there is no direct evidence that green tea consumption reduces acute respiratory infections in children. The hypothesis is plausible on mechanism but untested in the population and outcome that matter. Confidence: low.
