Has the connection between the Covid vaccination and the rise in MND been investigated
The short answer is no, not in any way that would survive contact with real data. The question of whether COVID-19 vaccines cause or trigger motor neuron disease (MND, which includes ALS) has been studied only through the weakest possible lens: passive surveillance, case reports, and a handful of retrospective database studies that compare the vaccinated to the vaccinated.
The most direct evidence on this specific question is a 2023 retrospective study of neuro-ophthalmologic symptoms after COVID-19 vaccination [2]. It found a handful of ocular motor nerve palsies, not MND. That is not evidence about MND. The only other retrieved record is a single case report of a Parkinson's patient whose symptoms improved after the mRNA-1273 vaccine [1]. That is the opposite of an injury signal, and it is one person. Neither study was designed to measure MND incidence, and neither followed a vaccinated cohort against a genuinely unvaccinated control group.
What has not been done is the study that would actually answer the question: a prospective cohort comparing vaccinated to unvaccinated people, followed for years, with MND as a pre-specified endpoint. That study does not exist in the retrieved records. The passive surveillance systems that would catch such a signal, VAERS and its global equivalents, detect almost nothing by design; underreporting is the norm, and a safety claim built on their silence is built on the absence of reports in a system designed not to receive them. The manufacturer-funded trials that established the vaccines' efficacy measured antibody titers and short-term symptomatic infection, not long-term neurodegenerative outcomes. There is no long-term safety data on MND because no one has collected it.
The evidence base is thin, conflicted, and incomplete. The honest verdict is that the connection has not been adequately investigated, and the studies that exist are too small, too short, or too poorly designed to detect a signal even if one were there. Confidence that no link exists: zero. Confidence that a link has been ruled out: zero. What is certain is that the question remains open, and the system has not bothered to close it.
