How do I know if I tore my meniscus or strained it

The short version: a torn meniscus is a structural injury you can see on MRI; a strain is a stretch or partial tear that often heals on its own.

The evidence here is mostly about MRI accuracy, not about how to tell the two apart at home. MRI is excellent at finding meniscal tears, with sensitivity around 87-91% for medial tears and specificity above 90% [1, 3]. But no study in this retrieval compares clinical exam findings to MRI for distinguishing tear from strain. That gap matters. A locked knee or a pop with immediate swelling points to a tear, but the evidence here doesn't validate those signs against imaging.

The funding question is simple: none of these studies were funded by a manufacturer, and they compare MRI to arthroscopy, which is the direct look inside the joint. That is the strongest design available. The weakness is age. The best accuracy data is from 1996 and 2007 [1, 3]. MRI technology has improved, but the diagnostic logic has not changed.
