If gut issues are involved, what safe diet or probiotics help?

The short version: no study in this retrieval tested a specific diet or probiotic for facial fungal infection, but the mechanistic evidence for Saccharomyces boulardii and Lactobacillus strains is strong enough to try.

The evidence you have is about gut health in general, not about facial fungal infections. A meta-analysis of 42 studies found that probiotics reduced antibiotic-associated diarrhea by about 37% [1], and S. boulardii specifically cut the risk of C. difficile infection by about 70% [1]. These are gut outcomes, not skin outcomes, but the mechanism matters: a stronger gut barrier means fewer fungi and their toxins cross into the bloodstream to reach the skin.

For diet, the evidence is even thinner. Fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut contain live lactic acid bacteria that can survive the gut and modulate immune responses [4, 5, 6]. A 2020 Nature Communications study showed that food-derived Lactobacillus strains are a major source of gut LAB [5]. But no study in this retrieval tested whether eating these foods changes the course of a fungal skin infection. The logic is plausible: less sugar feeds less yeast, and more beneficial bacteria compete with fungi for space.
