Is ivermectin good for treating cancer?
The short version: ivermectin kills cancer cells in lab dishes and animal models through several well-described mechanisms, but no human trial has proven it works as a cancer treatment in people.
The evidence you have is all preclinical. Every study here is in cell lines or mice. The 2020 review [7] summarizes ivermectin's anticancer mechanisms: it blocks AKT/mTOR and Wnt signaling, degrades PAK1, inhibits YAP1, and is selectively toxic to cancer stem cells. The 2015 study [3] shows it kills breast cancer cells by flooding them with ATP and triggering an inflammatory cell death that looks like it could wake up the immune system. The 2016 glioblastoma study [5] shows it shuts down mitochondrial respiration and cuts off tumor blood supply. The 2019 glioma study [4] shows it triggers autophagy through AKT/mTOR inhibition, and combining it with chloroquine boosted apoptosis from 29% to 60% in one cell line. The 2021 esophageal cancer study [6] shows it works through mitochondrial dysfunction and ROS accumulation. The 2026 study [1] is a clever delivery trick: wrapping ivermectin in platelet-membrane-coated nanocrystals to target breast tumors, which shrank tumors 1.8-fold better than uncoated ivermectin in mice.

The gap is enormous. Preclinical activity does not predict clinical success. Most drugs that kill cancer cells in dishes fail in humans. Ivermectin is a safe drug at its approved doses (for parasites), but the doses that kill cancer cells in these studies are in the low micromolar range, which may not be reachable in human tumors without toxicity. No randomized controlled trial in cancer patients has been published. No long-term safety data at anticancer doses exists. The 2025 review [2] is about COVID-19 vaccines, not cancer, and does not help here.
My call: ivermectin has plausible anticancer mechanisms and strong preclinical data, but there is no human evidence it works as a cancer treatment. Confidence: low for clinical benefit, moderate for preclinical activity.
