List studies of DMSO for neurological desease, disorder

DMSO has been tested in a handful of neurological conditions, and the results are thin, mixed, and mostly from small or uncontrolled studies.

The neurological evidence in this retrieval is one small pilot trial of a DMSO plus fructose 1,6-diphosphate mixture (PHA-56) in elderly ischemic stroke patients [10]. It was preliminary, not placebo-controlled in a clean way, and reported neurologic recovery in some patients, with timing of treatment seeming to matter [10]. That is a signal, not proof. A separate rat study found intravesical DMSO suppressed spinal nerve firing from bladder distension, which is a pain mechanism, not a neurological disease treatment [6]. The rest of the DMSO records are off-target for neurology: bladder pain [3][4][5], osteoarthritis [7][9], rheumatic disease [8], infection [2], and cell toxicity [1].

ConditionStudy typeWhat it showed
Ischemic stroke (elderly)Preliminary pilot, DMSO+FDP [10]Some improved, timing mattered
Bladder pain (nerve firing)Rat spinal recording [6]50% DMSO cut evoked activity to 24% of baseline
General cell safetyReview, lab cells [1]DMSO is cytotoxic at low concentrations

The safety picture matters. A 2024 review found DMSO reduced viability and increased cell death in human stem cells at concentrations as low as 0.01% [1]. That is a solvent that crosses into tissue, not an inert carrier.

This retrieval cannot see the wider DMSO neurology literature, including any stroke, spinal cord, or traumatic brain injury trials that exist outside these searches. What surfaced is one pilot and one animal pain study. That is not a basis for treating a neurological disease.

My call: the evidence here does not support DMSO for any neurological disease, and the one human trial is too small and too preliminary to act on. Confidence: low.
