How long does afib last
The short version: the evidence does not tell you how long afib lasts in a general patient. It tells you about specific triggers and mechanisms, not a clock.
The retrieved studies give durations only in narrow contexts. In a canine model, spontaneous atrial fibrillation lasted a mean of 92 seconds before reverting to flutter or sinus rhythm [1]. In patients with paroxysmal AF, the mean episode duration was 12 hours [6]. Digoxin treatment was associated with longer attacks, not shorter [4]. Over six months, mean episode duration increased from 9.2 to 13.8 minutes in untreated patients [11]. None of these studies was designed to answer "how long does afib last" for a typical person. The question is too broad for the evidence.

The evidence does not contain a population-based study of episode duration in untreated humans. The range is seconds to hours, and progression to persistent AF depends on left atrial size, age, and underlying disease [19, 20]. No single answer exists.
