Is the meningitis vaccine safe
The short version: the evidence shows the meningitis vaccine is reactogenic but the safety data is thin, short-term, and mostly funded by the manufacturer.
The evidence you were given covers a mix of serogroup B and ACWY vaccines across infants, children, and adolescents. The largest safety study, a Vaccine Safety Datalink analysis of 1.25 million first doses of MenACWY-D, detected expected events like fever and urticaria but also a pleurisy signal the authors dismissed as likely false [8]. That study used a data-mining method on administrative codes, not a randomized trial. The German postmarketing surveillance of the MenB vaccine 4CMenB found 20.6% of 664 reports were serious, with a disproportionality signal for febrile convulsions [1]. A small Italian study in children with chronic conditions reported no hospitalizations but 12.1% had severe refusal to move an extremity [2]. The Mali RCT, which used the meningococcal vaccine as an active control for influenza vaccine, found more serious adverse events in the influenza group but did not compare meningococcal vaccine to a true placebo [9].

The nephrotic syndrome study is the only one that compared vaccinated to unvaccinated over time and found a statistically significant harm: a 52% increase in relapse rate after MenC vaccination [26]. That study is 23 years old and has not been replicated. The rest of the evidence compares vaccinated to vaccinated, uses short follow-up, or relies on passive surveillance that detects almost nothing by design. No study in this retrieval compared long-term all-cause outcomes in vaccinated versus unvaccinated healthy children.
My call: the meningitis vaccine has documented short-term reactogenicity and one signal of harm in a vulnerable population, but the evidence base lacks the long-term, independently funded, unvaccinated-comparator studies needed to call it safe.
