Metavive . porcine thyroid complex

Oct 1, 2026 · 4 sources used · OpenNeedle synthesis
The evidence for Metavive (porcine thyroid complex) is thin and comes from a single small trial, not from the manufacturer or from long-term safety data.

The only directly relevant study is a 2013 randomized, double-blind, crossover trial comparing desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) to levothyroxine in 70 hypothyroid patients [4]. It found no significant improvement in quality of life with DTE. However, patients lost about 3 pounds on DTE, and nearly half (48.6%) preferred it over levothyroxine [4]. This trial was not funded by a DTE manufacturer, but it is a single study with a crossover design, which can carry over effects between treatment periods.

The rest of the retrieved records are about basic porcine thyroid biology, not about Metavive as a product. They cover things like chromatin transcription [1], thyroglobulin sulfation [2], and follicle polarity [3]. These do not speak to the safety or efficacy of a commercial supplement.

No long-term safety data for Metavive or any porcine thyroid complex was found in this search. The 2013 trial lasted only long enough for the crossover, not years. The risk of over- or under-treatment is real, since the T4/T3 ratio in animal thyroid is fixed and may not match what a given person needs. The evidence does not show that Metavive is dangerous, but it also does not show it is safe beyond a few months of use.

My call: the evidence for Metavive is limited to one small trial showing modest weight loss and patient preference, with no long-term safety data. Confidence: low.

Thyrotropin downregulates thyroglobulin sulfation, particularly tyrosine sulfation, and shifts remaining sulfate residues toward oligosaccharide units in porcine thyroid cells, with iodide having a modest modulatory role.
