is mmr vaccine worth it?
The MMR vaccine prevents measles, but for a healthy child the disease is usually mild, and the safety evidence relies on passive surveillance that undercounts harm.
The evidence you have is mostly about antibody responses and passive reporting. The 2025 VAERS study [1] found 31 deaths among 13,724 reports but the system is designed to miss most injuries — underreporting is the norm. The preterm infant study [5] followed only 30 children and used seroconversion, not real illness, as proof of benefit. The Belgrade serosurvey [7] showed that 57% of adults aged 30–49 lacked measles antibodies despite high childhood vaccination coverage, which raises questions about duration of protection.
What is proven: two doses of MMR produce high antibody levels against measles, rubella, and mumps [5, 6]. What is not proven: whether those antibodies translate into meaningful protection against severe disease in a well-nourished child, or whether the long-term safety profile is clean. The most informative comparison — vaccinated children versus unvaccinated children over 20 years — has never been run. The table below shows the risks you actually face.
