Question explored with the scientific record
What are the most effective naturopathic treatments for bubonic plague?
The short version: no naturopathic treatment has been shown to cure bubonic plague, and relying on one instead of antibiotics is a lethal gamble.
Bubonic plague is a fast-moving bacterial infection. In the Botswana outbreak, 170 cases killed 12 people, about 7 in 100 [12]. Untreated, the death rate is far higher. The retrieved studies on plague are about bacterial genetics, vaccines, and tracking methods [1][2][3][4][5]. None tests any naturopathic remedy against the live infection. That absence is the finding: there is no evidence here that herbs, fasting, or hydrotherapy treat plague.
The naturopathic studies that did surface are for other conditions. Fasting helped overweight patients lose weight short-term but they regained it [6]. Yoga and mudpacks lowered stress in diabetic women [7]. Lifestyle programs improved quality of life in ulcerative colitis and lung cancer [9][10]. None of this transfers to a bacterial sepsis that kills within days.
Worse, some naturopathic practices carry direct harm. A vitamin C infusion prepared by a naturopath caused severe sepsis from contaminated equipment [11]. A garlic skin wrap caused a second-degree chemical burn [8]. In plague, the clock matters. Antibiotics are the only intervention with proven mortality benefit; delaying them for an unproven remedy is the real risk.
My call: naturopathic treatments have no evidence of efficacy against bubonic plague and should not replace antibiotics. Confidence: high.

The Origin of a Killer Revealed by Bronze Age Yersinia Genomes
This study reveals the evolutionary history of Yersinia pestis, the bacterium responsible for the bubonic plague, by analyzing genomes retrieved from 2,800 to 5,000-year-old human remains, suggesting that the virulent strain evolved from a less pathogenic lineage long before rec…

yadBC of Yersinia pestis , a New Virulence Determinant for Bubonic Plague
This study identifies yadB and yadC as Yersinia pestis–encoded YadA-like surface proteins (the yadBC operon), demonstrates their potential to form oligomers and influence epithelial cell invasion, and reports on their role in bubonic versus pneumonic plague virulence, a claim la…

Adaptive response of Yersinia pestis to extracellular effectors of innate immunity during bubonic plague
NO-derived nitrosative stress in the extracellular buboes shapes Yersinia pestis transcriptional response, with Hmp detoxification and iron-acquisition upregulation underpinning virulence.

Real-time tracking of Yersinia pestis infection dynamics using a near-infrared fluorescent protein labeling system
A miRFP670nano3 near-infrared fluorescent labeling system tracked Yersinia pestis dissemination in mice; 201-nano3 was ~1.5-fold brighter than 201-p-nano3, showed no growth or survival defect, and NIR intensity reflected virulence attenuation.

Yersinia pestis strains from Latvia show depletion of the pla virulence gene at the end of the second plague pandemic
Ancient Yersinia pestis genomes recovered from Riga, Latvia reveal pla-depleted coexisting pla+ and pla− plasmids in post-Black Death strains, with phylogenetic placement near other European post-Black Death genomes, suggesting virulence changes that may have contributed to the …
