The short version: the link is real but mostly psychological, not a direct brain injury.
Psychogenic nonepileptic attacks are seizures that look like epilepsy but have no abnormal brain electrical activity. They are stress responses, not neurological damage. The gold standard for diagnosis is video-EEG recording of an episode [18]. The question is whether COVID vaccines can trigger them.
The strongest evidence comes from a population study in Zhejiang, China covering 284 million vaccine doses. It found 421 psychogenic adverse events, about 1.5 per million doses. COVID vaccines accounted for 315 of those cases, and 84% started within an hour of the shot [1]. The pattern is telling: most cases were young women, most happened on the day of vaccination, and most resolved quickly. That timing points to anxiety and fainting reactions, not an immune attack on the brain.
Case reports of functional neurological disorders after COVID vaccination exist, with symptoms starting anywhere from one day to eight weeks after the shot [8, 9]. But these are individual reports, not proof of causation. The mechanism is plausibly psychological: vaccination clinics, needles, and pandemic fear are stressful settings, and stress is a known trigger for these attacks.
What the evidence does not show is a direct biological link. No study in this retrieval demonstrates that vaccine components damage the brain areas involved in these attacks. The epilepsy studies found only small, transient seizure increases in people with poorly controlled epilepsy, mostly resolving on their own [2, 3]. That is a different condition from psychogenic attacks, but it suggests the vaccines do not broadly destabilize the nervous system.

The honest answer is that the association is real but the cause is likely psychological stress, not vaccine toxicity. If someone develops these attacks after vaccination, they deserve proper diagnosis and psychological care, not dismissal. But the evidence does not support a direct biological mechanism.
