What is a normal crp level
The short version: a normal CRP is below 3 mg/L for most healthy adults, but the real answer depends on which test you got and why you are checking.
A normal C-reactive protein level depends on the assay and the population. For the standard test, a 1999 study of 491 healthy blood donors found median values of 2.4 mg/L for men and 2.2 mg/L for women, with 95% of people falling between about 0.4 and 5.4 mg/L [1]. Most clinical labs set the upper limit of normal around 3 to 5 mg/L. The high-sensitivity CRP (hs-CRP) test measures the same protein but can detect lower levels, and is used mainly for cardiovascular risk assessment. In that context, levels below 1 mg/L are considered low risk, 1 to 3 mg/L is average risk, and above 3 mg/L is high risk.
CRP is not a fixed number. It rises with infection, inflammation, tissue damage, and even stress. A 2018 study of obese adults found mean hs-CRP of 2.9 mg/L in those with normal blood sugar and 3.4 mg/L in those with impaired fasting glucose [6]. A 2025 study of adults on growth hormone therapy found that keeping IGF-1 in the upper-normal range was linked to lower hs-CRP (0.8 vs 1.8 mg/L) [5]. Pregnancy, cancer, autoimmune disease, and even intense exercise can push CRP up. A single mildly elevated CRP tells you almost nothing without context.
My call: for a healthy person not taking any intervention, a CRP below 3 mg/L is normal and below 1 mg/L is optimal. Confidence: moderate, because the reference ranges are well-established but the clinical meaning of a borderline result depends entirely on why you tested.
