What PET tracer or higher-resolution imaging could target eccrine glands?
No PET tracer on the market targets eccrine glands specifically; the realistic tools are FDG-PET read at the skin level, high-resolution MRI, and functional sweat testing — and the imaging part is mostly uncharted.
The retrieval came back thin for this exact question. It contains no study of eccrine-gland PET, no sweat-gland tracer work, and no anhidrosis imaging series. The nearest usable record is incidental FDG uptake in salivary glands, which shows glandular FDG signal is real, variable, and often asymmetric or transient between scans [1] — a caution that any low-grade skin or gland uptake you do see could be physiologic noise, not disease. Everything else retrieved is prostate PSMA tracers [2][3] or brain/vascular high-resolution MRI [4][5], which are retrieval strays for this question.
Outside this retrieval, but widely documented: there is no eccrine-selective PET tracer. FDG-PET/CT occasionally shows diffuse skin uptake in inflammatory states, but millimeter-scale eccrine coils sit below PET resolution, so the expected finding in primary anhidrosis is absent or background-level uptake, not a focal defect. If you wanted structure plus function, the practical stack is high-resolution MRI or ultrasound of a punch-biopsy-relevant skin region for anatomy, plus quantitative sudomotor tests (QSART, thermoregulatory sweat test) for function — those, not PET, are what actually characterize anhidrosis. A glucose-based PET/MRI would be expected to show, at best, subtle diffuse regional dermal signal differences; a gland-level hypo- or hypermetabolic pattern is not something current tracers can resolve.
My call: no specific PET tracer exists for eccrine glands; use FDG-PET only to exclude systemic inflammation, and rely on autonomic sweat testing plus skin-directed high-resolution imaging. Confidence: high that no dedicated tracer exists, low that any PET pattern would be diagnostic.
