What practical lighting changes help headaches (warm light, dimming, glare control)?
The short version: warm light, dimming, and glare control each have plausible mechanisms for reducing headache triggers, but the evidence retrieved does not test them directly in headache patients.
The studies in your evidence block are about building energy performance, plant growth, insect behavior, and thermal comfort in greenhouses [1, 4, 8, 9, 11, 13, 23, 24, 25, 26, 30]. None of them measure headache frequency, severity, or photophobia in humans. One study shows that bright light (5,000 lux) maintains body temperature and alertness while dim light (50 lux) increases sleepiness and lowers body temperature [15], which is relevant to circadian regulation but not to headache. Another study finds that dim light at night disrupts sleep-wake cycles in rats [22], and a third shows that dim light at night provokes depression-like behaviors and reduces hippocampal dendritic spine density in hamsters [19]. These are animal models, not human headache trials.
The gap is structural. The hypothesis that warm-spectrum, dimmable, glare-free lighting reduces headache is mechanistically plausible — flicker and blue-wavelength glare are known migraine triggers, and the visual system's sensitivity to high-frequency temporal modulation is well documented [14, 17, 27]. But the evidence retrieved contains zero human studies that compare headache outcomes under different lighting conditions. The building-performance literature shows that exterior shading and smart glazing can reduce indoor glare probability from intolerable to imperceptible [25, 30], and that patient-controlled blinds in hospital rooms correlate with shorter average length of stay [28], but these studies do not report headache as an endpoint.
My call: the evidence does not answer whether warm light, dimming, or glare control reduce headaches. The mechanism is plausible, the human studies are absent. Confidence: low, because the question was never tested in the retrieved evidence.
