RSO oil for cancer?
RSO oil has not been tested in a single controlled human trial for cancer treatment. The evidence is all lab work and anecdotes.
The retrieved studies do not contain a single clinical trial testing whether Rick Simpson Oil (a high-THC, full-plant extract) shrinks tumors or extends life in people with cancer. The closest evidence is a 2025 review of hemp oils that explicitly notes "limited robust clinical validation" and identifies only about 4 relevant clinical studies across all cannabinoid oils, none of which tested RSO specifically [1]. That review also flags massive variability in product composition, lack of standardized dosing, and the absence of high-quality long-term human trials [1].
What the evidence does cover is cannabinoid pharmacokinetics and symptom management. One study in advanced cancer patients found that an oromucosal THC-CBD spray (nabiximols, not RSO) did not outperform placebo for pain relief, though it improved sleep [2]. Another showed that CBD potently inhibits liver enzymes CYP3A4 and CYP3A5, meaning RSO could dangerously alter how chemotherapy and other drugs are metabolized [4]. The UK Food Standards Agency, in a 2024 safety assessment, set a provisional acceptable daily intake for pure CBD at just 10 mg per day for a healthy adult [3] — far below the hundreds of milligrams in a typical RSO dose.
The mechanism behind RSO's claimed anticancer effect — cannabinoids triggering apoptosis in cancer cells — is real in petri dishes and animal models. But that is a long way from a cure in a human body. No retrieved study shows that oral RSO, at any dose, produces tumor regression or improved survival in a single cancer patient. The burden of proof has not been met.
