Is the shingles vaccine safe

The shingles vaccine's safety record rests on short-term trials funded by the manufacturer, not on long-term independent data that compares vaccinated to unvaccinated people.

The recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix) causes injection-site reactions in most recipients—81.5% in one large industry-funded trial [9]—and systemic reactions in over half [9, 6]. A 2025 real-world Italian study found 44% of doses resulted in an adverse event, with 4% neurological and 10% fever [14].
