The retrieved studies barely touch your question. One rat study from 1999 tested four SSRIs (fluoxetine, paroxetine, citalopram, fluvoxamine) on alcohol intake and craving in alcohol-preferring rats, and found that different serotonin receptor subtypes pulled the effect in different directions [1]. That is the only record that directly addresses SSRI-alcohol interaction. It tells you the biology is real but not simple: some receptor pathways may dampen craving, others may amplify it. It does not tell you what happens in a human.

The honest answer is that the evidence does not establish that SSRIs induce alcohol cravings, and it does not rule it out either. The burden of proof sits with the prescriber. If you or someone you care about started an SSRI and noticed alcohol cravings getting worse, that temporal link deserves attention, not dismissal. The absence of a large, clean study comparing SSRI users to non-users on alcohol craving is a gap in the evidence base, not proof of safety.

My call: the evidence is not clear, and a personal worsening of cravings while on an SSRI should be taken seriously and discussed with the prescriber, not explained away. Confidence: low.
