Taking Zinc (30mg) with NR for IPF
The short version: there is no evidence that combining zinc with nattokinase helps or harms in IPF, and the retrieval does not test this question.
None of the records test zinc plus nattokinase in IPF patients. The retrieval is mostly off-topic: a zinc study on mouth ulcers [1], a self-experiment with metformin for tinnitus [2], a review of nattokinase for blood lipids [3], a UV crosslinking method [4], a ciprofloxacin–metal interaction study [5], a 1988 nutrition review [6], a dental supplement interaction guide [7], a Nipah virus polymerase structure [8], a zinc-metabolism gene study in osteoarthritis [9], a drug design pipeline [10], a Bcl-xL virtual screen [11], a neuroprotective peptide study [12], and several IPF biology papers [13, 14]. None of these address the combination.
What the retrieval does show is that zinc can interfere with drug absorption. The dental interaction guide lists zinc as reducing tetracycline absorption, with a recommendation to separate dosing by at least 3 hours [7]. That is a known chelation effect: zinc binds to certain drugs and minerals in the gut, forming insoluble complexes. The same mechanism could reduce absorption of nattokinase or other oral agents taken at the same time, though nattokinase is a protein, not a small-molecule drug, and the interaction has not been studied.
The nattokinase review [3] reports lipid-lowering and plaque-reduction effects at doses of 2000 to 10,800 FU daily, with no obvious adverse events in studies lasting 56 to 365 days. But those studies were in adults with hyperlipidemia or carotid thickening, not IPF. The safety profile in a fibrotic lung patient on multiple medications is unknown.
Zinc at 30 mg daily is within the tolerable upper intake level for adults (40 mg/day), but chronic use can cause copper deficiency [7]. In IPF, where inflammation and oxidative stress are central, zinc’s role is complex: it is an essential cofactor for antioxidant enzymes, but excess zinc can also promote fibrosis through TGF-β activation. No study here tests that balance in IPF.
My call: the combination is untested. The known interaction is a gut-level chelation risk, not a lung-specific one. Confidence: not clear.
