Turmeric supplements?

The short version: turmeric looks genuinely useful for inflammation and metabolic markers, but the evidence is mostly short-term, industry-funded, and rarely tests hard outcomes.

The strongest human data comes from randomized trials. A 2025 umbrella review of 72 trials found curcumin lowers total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides while raising HDL, with the biggest effects in people with fatty liver, diabetes, or PCOS [23]. A 2012 trial in prediabetic people found 9 months of curcumin lowered fasting glucose from about 108 to 86 mg/dL and cut progression to diabetes [11]. A 2016 trial in NAFLD patients found lower cholesterol, LDL, and uric acid [15]. For pain, a 2020 trial found a turmeric-black pepper-ginger mix matched naproxen for knee osteoarthritis, cutting the inflammatory marker PGE2 about as much [25]. A 2023 pilot in six soccer players found 270 mg/day cut IL-6 by about 30% [9].

But watch the limits. The 2025 lipid review is an umbrella review of meta-analyses, which inherits publication bias: null trials vanish, positive ones get published [23]. The diabetes trial used a special high-bioavailability formulation, not grocery-store turmeric [11]. The osteoarthritis trial was four weeks, not years [25]. The soccer study had six people [9]. Much of the rest of the retrieved evidence is fish, chickens, piglets, and mice [1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13]. That tells you about mechanisms, not about your body.

Safety data is thin. A 2025 trial in diabetics found nausea in about 14 in 100, headache in 11 in 100, and yellow stool in 11 in 100 at 1500 mg/day [16]. Curcumin also binds to blood albumin and can displace drugs like tamoxifen, which matters if you take medication [10]. No long-term safety data exists in this evidence. No trial here followed anyone for years.

My call: turmeric is a reasonable, low-risk adjunct for inflammation, lipids, and blood sugar, but treat it as a supplement, not a drug, and expect modest effects. Confidence: moderate for short-term metabolic and anti-inflammatory benefits, low for long-term safety and hard outcomes.
