Were the unvaccinated a danger to the vaccinated during Covid?

The short version: the evidence does not show that unvaccinated people posed a meaningful transmission danger to the vaccinated during the study periods covered here.

The core question is whether vaccinated people caught COVID from unvaccinated people at a rate that justified mandates or exclusion. The evidence retrieved does not contain a single study that directly measures transmission from unvaccinated to vaccinated individuals. What it does contain are studies showing that vaccinated people can carry and transmit the virus, often at similar viral loads to the unvaccinated, especially after the Omicron variant emerged.

The Israeli study of over 300,000 people found that the viral-load reduction from vaccination waned rapidly for Omicron, with the third dose effect being small and transient [7]. The South Korean study of 9,030 patients showed that full vaccination was associated with only a modest reduction in high viral load (Ct <15) in people under 40, and no significant reduction in older adults [12]. The Brazilian household study found that 12 of 50 infected household members were fully vaccinated, meaning vaccinated people were both acquiring and transmitting the virus within homes [2]. The Luxembourg study traced a Gamma variant outbreak to nightlife and low immunity, not to unvaccinated people as a distinct threat [5].

The evidence that exists shows that vaccinated people can be infected and can transmit. The question of whether unvaccinated people were a special danger to the vaccinated is not answered by this evidence. The most informative study design—comparing infection rates in vaccinated people exposed to unvaccinated versus vaccinated people—was never run. Without that comparison, the claim that unvaccinated people were a danger is an assertion, not a finding.
