How useful is taurine supplementation

The short version: taurine supplementation shows modest, real effects on blood pressure and exercise performance, but the evidence is thin, mostly short-term, and funded by no one you can trust.

The strongest human trial here is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 120 prehypertensive adults given 1.6 g of taurine daily for 12 weeks [5]. It found clinic systolic blood pressure dropped by about 7 mmHg and diastolic by about 5 mmHg, with improvements in blood vessel function. A separate meta-analysis of six studies confirmed a moderate blood-pressure-lowering effect across different populations, with drops ranging from 3% to 12% in systolic pressure [4]. That is a real signal, but the longest trial in that meta-analysis was 12 weeks. No one has studied what happens after a year or two of daily taurine.

For exercise, a meta-analysis of 10 small studies (116 total participants) found a small but significant improvement in endurance, with an effect size of 0.40 [3]. That is a real effect, but the total sample is tiny and the studies were short. One human study that showed endurance gains used a proprietary blend of taurine with soybean peptides, isoflavones, and ginseng, so you cannot isolate taurine's contribution [2].

The rat study is a warning: maternal taurine supplementation in late pregnancy accelerated growth but induced obesity and insulin resistance in adult offspring [1]. That is one animal study, not human data, but it means the long-term metabolic effects are not settled.
