what works better for warts, freezing or the acid treatment
The short version: for a common wart on a child, salicylic acid and cryotherapy are nearly tied, and neither is a sure thing.
The best single piece of evidence is a 2011 meta-analysis of randomized trials. Salicylic acid cured about 52% of warts, cryotherapy about 49%, and placebo about 23% [4]. Aggressive cryotherapy (freezing hard enough to blister) hit 54%, and combining both treatments reached 58% [4]. A 2015 trial in children found a similar pattern: 81% for imiquimod plus salicylic acid versus 67% for cryotherapy, but the difference was not statistically significant [2]. The numbers are close enough that technique and patient tolerance matter more than the choice itself.

Neither treatment is risk-free. Salicylic acid can cause severe hypersensitivity reactions [16] and, when applied over large areas, systemic toxicity [14, 15]. Cryotherapy can hurt, blister, and scar. The evidence does not include a long-term safety comparison between the two. The most honest answer is that both work about half the time, and the difference between them is smaller than the difference between either and doing nothing.
My call: for a single common wart, start with salicylic acid because it is cheaper, less painful, and equally effective. Confidence: moderate — the head-to-head data is thin, but the meta-analysis is decent.
