How do you check for other nutrient gaps from processed-food diets?

Oct 31, 2026 · 8 sources used · OpenNeedle synthesis
A processed-food diet doesn't just leave gaps. It leaves a specific, testable pattern: low iron, low B12, low vitamin D, low zinc, and too much copper.

The cheapest screen is a blood panel, not a supplement aisle. Ask for ferritin plus a full blood count, serum B12, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, and a metabolic panel. Ferritin catches iron depletion before anemia appears; in one pregnancy cohort 38% were depleted while only 2.5% were anemic [1]. B12 deficiency is common even where you would not expect it: about a third of adults in one hospital series were deficient [2], and about a third of adults with nerve symptoms were deficient [3]. Vitamin D deficiency runs 56% in one large Pakistani sample [6] and 84% had low levels in another [7]. Zinc is the gap with no good routine test; serum zinc drops with inflammation, so it is unreliable [8].

NutrientTestWhat the records show
IronFerritin, CBC38% depleted in early pregnancy [1]
B12Serum B1233.5% deficient in one adult series [2]
Vitamin D25(OH)D56% deficient in one large sample [6]
ZincNone reliableSerum zinc confounded by inflammation [8]

Two things distort the picture. Acid-suppressing drugs like PPIs raise B12 deficiency risk, pooled odds about 1.8 for ten months or more of use [4]. Metformin does the same, with deficiency tied to higher dose and longer use [5]. If she is on either, test B12 regardless of diet.

My call: get ferritin, B12, and vitamin D measured before supplementing anything; treat only what the numbers show, and treat zinc on symptoms, not a serum level. Confidence: moderate for iron, B12, and D; low for zinc.
