The evidence you retrieved is a scattered collection. It shows GGT rises in metabolic syndrome [5, 11], in acute coronary syndrome patients who go on to have more cardiac events [6], and in hepatocellular carcinoma where higher levels predict worse survival [9, 12]. It also shows GGT can be normal in some forms of genetic cholestasis [10]. None of these studies test a practical question: what causes a mildly elevated GGT in a person who feels fine, and what should be done next.

The 2025 study on juvenile arthritis [2] is the most recent, but it compares two sick groups, not a sick group to a healthy one. The 2009 metabolic syndrome study [5] is the closest to a general population finding: higher GGT tracks with insulin resistance and obesity. But it is a cross-sectional snapshot, not a trial. It cannot tell you whether the GGT caused the metabolic problem or the metabolic problem raised the GGT.

What is missing from this retrieval is the most common causes: fatty liver disease (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), drug-induced liver injury from common medications like statins or acetaminophen, and bile duct obstruction. The evidence here does not address those at all. The retrieval is thin and off-target for a practical question.
