How does taurine compare with proven treatments like lifestyle or meds?

The short version: taurine is a real but weak tool compared to lifestyle changes, and the evidence for it is far thinner than for diet and exercise.

The strongest human trial here is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 120 prehypertensive adults given 1.6 g of taurine daily for 12 weeks [16]. It found clinic systolic blood pressure dropped by about 7 mmHg and diastolic by about 5 mmHg. That is a real signal. But compare it to what lifestyle changes do: a DASH diet alone typically drops systolic pressure by 8 to 14 mmHg, and adding exercise pushes that higher. Taurine's effect is about half of what you get from changing what you eat and moving your body.

For endurance, a meta-analysis of 10 small studies (116 total participants) found a small positive effect on time to exhaustion, with an effect size of 0.40 [18]. That is a real but modest improvement. Compare it to six weeks of aerobic training, which improves time to exhaustion by roughly three times that amount in most studies. Taurine is not a substitute for training.

For muscle cramps in cirrhosis, a randomized crossover trial of 30 patients found that 2 g of taurine daily reduced cramp frequency by about 7 cramps per week compared to placebo [12]. That is a meaningful benefit for that specific population, but it is a narrow indication.

The rat study is a warning: maternal taurine supplementation in late pregnancy induced obesity and insulin resistance in adult offspring [7]. That is one animal study, not human data, but it means the long-term metabolic effects are not settled.

My call: taurine at 1-2 g daily is a weak adjunct, not a replacement for diet and exercise. For blood pressure, it gives about half the benefit of a DASH diet. For endurance, it is a fraction of what training does. The long-term safety data does not exist. Confidence: moderate for short-term blood pressure benefit, low for everything else.
