The short version: turmeric tablets deliver curcumin poorly, and the evidence for benefit is thin and conflicted.

Turmeric root is about 2-5% curcumin by weight. A typical turmeric tablet supplement contains around 500 mg of turmeric powder, which gives you roughly 10-25 mg of curcumin. The problem is that curcumin is almost insoluble in water and gets broken down quickly in the gut. Human studies consistently find that plain curcumin reaches very low levels in the blood [1, 2]. The evidence shows that bioavailability-enhanced formulations (like those with piperine or nanoparticles) produce much higher blood levels than plain turmeric powder [3, 6]. A 2025 umbrella review of 72 randomized trials found that whole turmeric compounds actually lowered LDL more than enhanced formulations in some comparisons, but the overall effects were modest [3].

The safety record from clinical trials is reasonable. A 2025 pharmacovigilance review of 39 turmeric studies found few serious adverse events [8]. But there is a real drug interaction risk: a 2025 rat study found that curcumin plus piperine increased the blood level of the antipsychotic quetiapine by about 60% [4]. That is a large effect. Anyone on prescription medications should check for interactions before taking turmeric supplements.

The evidence for benefit is mixed. A meta-analysis of 3 trials in ulcerative colitis found curcumin plus mesalamine raised remission odds by about 6.8 times [5], but another 2018 meta-analysis found no benefit over placebo [5]. The same review found curcumin did not significantly improve irritable bowel syndrome symptoms [5]. A 2020 systematic review of skin conditions found potential benefits but called the studies small and biased [1]. The lipid effects from the 2025 umbrella review are real but modest: total cholesterol down about 8 mg/dL, LDL down about 6 mg/dL, triglycerides down about 13 mg/dL [3]. Those numbers are not nothing, but they are not dramatic.
